My Epic Motorcycle Trip

For those of you that don’t know, I am obsessed with motorcycles.  I got my first one when I was a teenager and I have been attached to them in one fashion or another for over 15 years.  In fact I would dare to say I have owned about ten different motorcycles over the years.  What can I say, I have commitment issues when it comes to bikes.

My latest young steed is a 2008 Ducati Hypermotard.  Her name is Tabitha, and she is one angry, powerful and temperamental motorcycle.  However,  if I am nice to her, she delivers me in to a world of speed and adrenaline which finally transforms into a nirvana of peace and quite.  Ahhh… riding with quiet thoughts and beautiful images rushing past my head.  Like I said, nirvana!

OBJECTIVE: to ride over 2400 miles to see National Parks in the states of Utah and Arizona over the course of 8 days. During the process we covered ground through California and Nevada as well.  I was going to take my big camera but it wouldn’t fit on my bike.  So I decided to photograph this entire trip with my iPhone.  Yup, you heard right.  All of these photos were taken with my iPhone.  It definitely pushed me to be a bit more creative and not depend on my fancy gear so much.

In the first photo you’ll see Tabitha.  She is definitely not intimidated by all those Harley’s around her.  She wouldn’t hesitate to get all “Real Housewives of New Jersey” on them if she needed to.  The cool door to the right is the entrance to an old diner where I  had one of the best omelets of my life.

A nice sunrise to start the day.  Oh yes… the bird on the pole.  The most entertaining part about this was when that bird would dive down to take food from peoples hands.  I have never seen people get so freaked by a bird in my life.  There was a lot of cursing at the bird and a lot of laughing by my friends and I.  Good times!

First official stop for the night… Las Vegas!  I remember taking these photos on Fremont Street, but that  is where things start to go a bit fuzzy. Weird!

We are now entering into the world of Zion National Park.  This place is pretty crazy with its towering structures and really scary pitch black tunnels.  I laid down on the ground to get this shot in between speeding traffic.

Brute force pushing up these rocks created this incredible texture that seems to photograph so well.

The photo on the left is a buffalo ranch.  We ate scrambled eggs with buffalo.  Yummers!  The photo on the right is just a bunch of pretty bushes.

Canyon Lands!  The color in these canyons blows my mind.  It is so expansive and desolate that it takes your breath away.

This bird would not stop harassing me for a photo.  I finally got fed up and just took a shot for him.  Good thing, I ended up really liking the photo!  The second shot is one of many vista points in the Grand Canyon.

What can I say… a sky and a tree.  I dig ‘em!

Tabitha and I started off great for the day.  We saw this beautiful eucalyptus grove.  Then she tried to buck me off going 65 miles per hour for no reason at all.  I left her by herself on that lonely road to think about what she did.  Little Betch!

Needless to say Tabitha and I made up.  I decided to take a great photo of her to remember the moment.  The road on the right was a dream to ride.  I ended up scratching up my knee pads on this one.  He he.

This is Arches National Park.  These towering rocks were the size of small skyscrapers.  So amazing!

Monument Valley and Grand Canyon.  These are two of my favorite shots from the trip.  I hope I do them a little justice.

The muted colors at the Grand Canyon are so amazing.  The size cannot be translated well enough into photos.  You will just have to see it in person.

On our way back to Nevada we stopped at a little sports bar for a cold one.  And wouldn’t you know it, there was a carnival going on in the parking lot.  Cool!

Well, I decided that I was on this side of the line.  Then I took a picture of the scary hallway of our hotel on the last night of the trip.  I was expecting Jack Nicholson to jump out with an axe at any second and say “Here’s Johnny!”.

This trip ended up being completely awesome.  I got to spend some time with my father and some great friends.  I know the wife worried about me when I was gone… but I just tell her the same thing every time I leave for a trip, “Don’t worry, me strong… like bull.”  That is her cue to shake her head in disgust and tell me to be careful anyway.  Aww to be loved.

Faith - I cannot believe these are iPhone photos! Just goes to show–it’s not the camera, it’s the eye. Beautiful! My favorite is the tunnel.
